Dupont Manual High School (Jefferson Co.) took first place in the Kentucky Economics Challenge and them took a grueling series of tests at their school to compete in the National Preliminary Economics Challenge. Winning team members from Robin Cash's class included Tim Scott, Zach Branson, Jared Giles and Nick LeClaire.  The team finished 18th out of 32 teams in the National Economics Challenge.  Team members were recognized  and received certificates and a school trophy at the KCEE's SMG Awards Luncheon on May 12 at the Louisville Pendennis Club.

The Kentucky Council on Economic Education announces the 7th annual KCEE Economics Challenge for high school students. The KCEE Economics Challenge is a part of the nationwide competition in economics, sponsored by the Council for Economic Education (CEE) and Goldman/Sachs. The National Economics Challenge is the only national competition to foster interest in economics among high school students by recognizing their achievements and offering a fun and competitive way to showcase their knowledge.

In the c
ompetition, teams of students take an online quiz, answering rigorous questions on microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics and current events. . This year, the National Economics Challenge will not have separate divisions as in the past, so the KCEE Challenge will be set up the same.   The KCEE Economics Challenge will ONLY consist of the online quiz competition.

What are the costs?  There are no fees to take part in the Economics Challenge.

Who can take part? Competition is open to any high school students taking an AP, Honors, or regular economics course or taking economics as part of a social studies, business, or survey course in Fall or Spring 2009-10.  Students must meet the national requirements too.

How is the test taken? Students take the online quiz as a team of 3 or 4 students, determined by the teacher/coach.  Each team will be assigned their own login ID. The Challenge consists of 30 multiple choice questions and is timed – 30 minutes.  At the end of 30 minutes, the online quiz will shut down.  The online Economics Challenge is open from March 29 – April 9, 2010 and must be proctored by the classroom teacher/coach.  Teachers will receive their team scores by end of day, April 12.

How is the state winning team determined?  The team with the highest score will be determined the State Winner and the top 10 rankings will be posted on the KCEE website. In case of a tie, there will be an online playoff.  The winning team will represent Kentucky in the national Economics Challenge which will be held April 26.  For more information about the National Challenge.

What do we win?  The first place winning team will receive a school trophy and certificates for winning members and the opportunity to represent Kentucky in the national Economics Challenge.

How do I register my teams?  The teacher/coach should complete the Economics Challenge registration form here.  You will receive the team logins and passwords by email.

Team Registration Deadline | April 2
To participate, teachers must register and begin creating teams.

State Online Economics Challenge | March 29 - April 9
Teams of four students each will compete online to decide the KCEE Economics Challenge champion team.  The winning team will advance to the National Semifinals.

National Semifinals | April 26
On April 26, 2010, state champions will compete in the National Semifinals.
The national semifinals round will be a written test held simultaneously at the schools of all state champions. The six top scoring teams from around the country will advance and travel to New York City, where they will compete for the National Championship title. For more information about semifinals.

National Finals | May 22-24
The six top qualifying teams from the National Semifinals will compete for the national championship in New York City on May 22-24, 2010. The best of the best will wear the national crown and serve as models to raise the bar for excellence in economics. Each member of the winning team and their teacher will receive a $1,500 cash prize, as well as medals and a championship trophy. The runner-up teams and their teachers will also receive a cash prize and medals. Most travel expenses for the national competition will be paid by national Council for Economic Education..
