An Innovative Way to Learn!

In The Stock Market Game™ (SMG), student teams in grades 4-12 receive a virtual $100,000 to invest in stocks and mutual funds using a real-world Internet simulation. SMG can be taught as an enrichment activity, a project-based activity, or teams of teachers can incorporate different
aspects of SMG into their own curriculum as an interdisciplinary project.

How does the program and competition work?  (SMG in 12 Easy Steps PowerPoint)
Students in grades 4 through 12 (and college!) are enrolled in teams and manage a simulated investment portfolio for 10 weeks. Starting with a virtual cash account of $100,000, students strive to create the best-performing portfolio using a live-Internet trading simulation.  Students research and evaluate companies and stock data and make investment decisions based on what they’ve learned. They work together in teams, developing leadership, organization, negotiation, and cooperation skills as they research company and stock data and compete for the top spot (and prizes!)  Rankings are updated daily and prizes are awarded to the top ranked teams!

As the teacher, you have the flexibility of choosing how much or how little class time to devote to the program. The Program can also be used as an after-school activity!  Grade and subject-specific curriculum guides, lesson plans, and newsletters are provided for classroom instruction and The Program and correlated lessons are aligned to Kentucky State Academic Standards.

Is it necessary to begin trading on the first day?  No, it is up to you when students begin making trades; in fact, many teams don't make their first trade until Week 3. Is it necessary to compete until the end of the competition?  If your class ends or can't manage portfolios as part of your class throughout the full 10 weeks, that is no problem, the portfolios will continue to  post changes throughout the program period, allowing your students to continue to compete.

New Teacher Promo FREE 3 week preview! Try out the simulation and make a trade, just as your students will do. Also, preview the SMG curriculum and resources available for teachers.

10 Week SMG  Participate in the Fall or Spring session.  Enhance your math, social studies, language arts, personal finance and technology classes. Invest in stocks and/or mutual funds. (Fee is $10/team)

Year Long SMG  The new Year-Long SMG includes stocks, mutual funds, and bonds too, for a truly diversified portfolio experience!  See information and specific rules. (Fee is $20/team)

Stock Market Game is a perfect match for 21st Century Learning Skills!

The Stock Market Game is the ultimate way to maximize 21st Century Learning in the classroom all while teaching math, economics, social studies, business, and language arts.  Easily incorporate the 4 “C”s of 21st Century Learning:

Critical Thinking: Students learn to research corporations online and analyze stock data and charts.  Based on the information they gather, they make decisions to buy, sell or hold their stock selections.

Communication:  They learn to use their communication skills as they work in teams to develop and manage their investment portfolios. They will use persuasive speaking skills as they make a case to buy, sell or hold a stock in their portfolio. They can articulate their research either orally or in written form.

Collaboration: Team members will work effectively and respectfully, learn to compromise, and value input from each member of the stock team.

Creativity:  The Stock Market Game includes an essay competition, InvestWrite, which requires teams to use what they learn about investing in a creative writing activity. Additionally, students can incorporate media (PowerPoint, video, etc.) to report their culminating experience.

Rubrics are provided for the teacher in the Teacher Support Center to evaluate critical thinking, collaboration, research, and oral skills of teams and individual team members by the teacher and/or by team members.

The Stock Market Game Program is an online educational program (and competition!) offered by the Kentucky Council on Economic Education for over 20 years, and used in classrooms to help teach math, social studies, business, economics, technology and reading/writing skills.  The program is offered each Fall and Spring semester. Over 10,000 students participate annually! The fee is $10/team (typically 3-5 students per team).

But, I don’t know anything about the stock market!
Many teachers who have used the Stock Market Game successfully in the classroom tell us they didn’t know anything about the stock market or investing when they started – they learned along with the students!  And KCEE is there to help with teacher training, state coordinator assistance.  In addition, teachers with classes participating in the program, receive an ID and password to the Teacher Support Center.

The Teacher Support Center includes: Teacher Guide, Course Outline, Rules, Lessons and Activities, Assessments, Standards Alignment, Investor Background, Publications, Portfolio Management, Understanding Portfolios, Projects, and InvestWrite.

How do I make time for the program in a full curriculum?
It takes 3 or 4 class periods to introduce your students to The Stock Market Game Program and to teach about the stock market and once it starts students should have the opportunity to review their team portfolio, post trades and research stocks about once a week,  in class or on their own.

You have the flexibility of choosing how much or how little class time to devote to the program. The flexibility of the program allows you to use it with a variety of subjects, including social studies, mathematics, business, practical living, language arts, as well as economics. It can also be integrated into school clubs, lunch or rainy day programs, after school, and gifted student activities. And KCEE has aligned the activities to the Kentucky Academic Expectations for Math,  Social Studies Business Economics, and  Practical Living.

How much does this cost?
$10 per team account. $20/team for Year Long SMG.

“The students think they are playing a game...however they are learning economic
and financial concepts they will use for the rest of their lives.”   Kentucky teacher
